Fabric Study Class

Week 1 to 6
We will be working with a mannequin or props to look at folds and tension in a variety of fabrics.  Each class will talk about the various issues and all will work on their drawing skills to portray the way fabric drapes.

Week 7 to10
1- 2 models – the last few classes we will use the information we have learned to address the same fabric folds on a live model[s].


Material List

Supplied by Students:
  • Drawing Mediums which can include: Charcoal, Conte, Pencil, Watercolour or Gouache washes, Markers [fine tip to brush – in any colour – 3 tones would be best
  • Erasers: 1) Kneaded , 2) White eraser within a paper sleeve or a mechanical holder for precise erasing
  • Erasing Shields - found in the drafting section of an art store.  Thin metal sheet with cut-out shapes - about 2"x3" - helps make clean and precise erasing.
  • Drawing Pads: 1) 11 x 14 drawing pads min. size, 2) 18 x24 sheets of newsprint or heavier paper  NOTE: coloured paper is best for chiaroscuro 
  • Trace Paper – not only for tracing but for to keep drawings from smudging.
  • Stomps for smudging – any size
    Brushes for washes – large to medium – watercolour or ink quality
    Tubes - paper or plastic
  • Large  Tubes – 1 or  more large 4” to 6” tubes up to 24 inches long
  • Small Tubes - 1 or more small 1” to 2” tubes 24 to 36 inches long
  • 2 Shoe Boxes – to wrap with fabric and create sharp edges
  • Fabric: 3ft x 3ft pieces – silk, polyester, cotton, corduroy, wool, denim, knits [you can even bring a sweater, shirt or jeans as part of your fabric]
  • Bull-dog Clips 1box of 1 inch or larger
  • Cords – thick and thin cord to bind or hang the fabric – this can be Nylon, Decorative or not - variety of size will be good.
  • Scissors - for fabric
